To implement blanket ban on plastic bottles used for potable water by the tourists and the locals, Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Rigzin Spalbar convened a meeting to chalk out the plan for the complete implementation of the ban imposed on December 21, 2011 and discussed the alternatives to provide pure drinking water to the Tourists which are coming to this region in the ensuing Tourist season.
Highlighting the dangers imposed by the unprecedented use of plastic bottles on the ecology of the region, the CEC said that if locals could provide an alternative to mineral water imported from outside Leh, it would result in maintaining the ecology and also will help in providing ample scope for economic upliftment of the region.
The annual requirement of drinking water for the tourists in one season has now gone up to 12 lakh litres costing about R1.80 crore which is being imported till date in the form of mineral water.
Till the purifying plants get installed only 20 litre bottles and water campers will be allowed in the region
